10/17/2017; Lesson 06: Response to " Differences in Emotional Expressivity".

EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIVENESS
HOW DOES IT WORK?

We can simplify emotional expressiveness as the way people demonstrate their feelings and emotions. All human beings have the same feelings and emotions but how they express them will vary according to their culture and the environment involved. Private circumstances provide an environment in which all people reveal their feelings and emotions likewise, regardless of their culture. On the other hand, emotional expressivity will be shaped according to the culture of the people when we have public situations involved.

According to Professor Ivers, we can classify the emotional expressiveness in an Emotional Expressivity Scale according to the culture of each country. On the left side, the LOW TOLERANCE EXPRESSIVITY side, we have countries as China, England, and Japan. On those places, people do not demonstrate their feelings and emotions publicly. On the right side, the HIGH TOLERANCE EXPRESSIVITY side, we have countries as Mexico, Italy, and Brazil. On those countries, people do not care about showing their feelings and emotions publicly.

Different tolerance expressivities are not exclusive characteristics found among nations. They can occur within the same nation. Brazil is a large country, and we have a huge cultural diversity here because were colonized by many countries. In general, we were classified in the high tolerance expressivity side. However, Brazilians from South are known as cold people by the other Brazilians. But I can claim, we are not cold, we are just very reserved. We do not talk to unknown people in the elevators, bus stops, or queues supermarkets. And when someone from North/Northeast asks us the time, we just say the time.

Despite that, as ESL/EFL teachers we must know these differences. We teach students from many cultures, and we must respect and manage this variety in our classrooms. Our students need to feel comfortable to learn better. And there will be times, we will need to help our students to adapt their tolerance expressivity to they do not suffer and to be accepted.
