In his video "Cultural Differences Concerning TIME", Brother Ivers teaches us about Monochronic and Polychronic Cultures. He encourages us to understand the characteristics of these two cultures to avoid misunderstanding. According to his words, in Monochronic Cultures the time is overvalued, and schedules are sacred. Countries as United States, Japan, Germany and South Korea are examples of Monochronic Cultures. In the other hand, we have the Polychronic Cultures where relationships are valued over time and material things. In many places in Latin America, countries as China, Pakistan, and Philippines we can find Polychronic Cultural characteristics. In those regions, people focus on relationships and time management is more flexible.
It is the first time I am studying it, and I can conclude that there is not a right or wrong side. As teachers, it is indispensable to know about these important differences because we could work with people from the entire world and then we will need to be conscious of their cultures. We also will be able to help our students to accept and respect these differences.
